First things first ...

Applying for your provisional license

Before you can learn to drive, you will need to apply for a provisional driving license. You can do this by post by completing a D1 application form available from the DVLA or the Post Office. Or, you can now apply for your license online - click here for more details.

Your eyesight

You also need to ensure that your eyesight is up to scratch. You must be able to read an old-style number plate from at least 20.5 metres or a new-style number plate (which start with two letters eg AB01, or HJ56) from at least 20 metres. If you need to wear glasses or contact lenses, you must wear them every time you drive.

Theory test

You don't have to start studying for your theory test before you get behind the wheel, but I recommend that you don't leave it too long before you do, as it will help you understand the rules of the road - see more info on theory here.
